Lohri is celebrated in India on January 13th, marking the end of the winter season and the start of harvest in northern states such as Punjab and Haryana. It has both a cultural and an agricultural meaning, as people express their gratitude and welcome longer days following the winter solstice. Lohri, traditionally associated with the harvesting of rabi, is a celebration that represents love, warmth and family.
The main focus of the festivities is usually a huge bonfire. In the evening, people gather with their colorful outfits. As part of this ritual, they offer sesame seed, sugarcane and jaggery. The offerings represent a way to express gratitude for the Sun God and nature, who have ensured a successful harvest. In ancient times, it was believed that the Sun God, if pleased, would send warmth to the village, protecting them from the coldest winters. In the past, maidens would go house-to-house and collect cow dung. They then piled it up in preparation for main day. In the evening, wood and cow dung are burned together.
Folk songs, such as Banghra and gidda, are played throughout the evening. Dhol plays a major role in the festivities. Fire itself represents the warmth and light of the sun, which drives away cold weather and brings in brighter days.
Lohri is a tradition steeped with storytelling. Many families share tales from folklore or legends. One of the most popular stories involves Dulla Batti, an Indian hero. According to legend, Dulla Bhatti lived in the Mughal period and was celebrated for his courage and sense of justice. He saved local girls by arranging their marriages and providing them with dowries. In the popular Lohri “Sundar Mundriye”, he tells of his heroic deeds. It is a story about two girls, Sundari & Mundari who he saved. The story is told around the bonfire and highlights themes such as courage, honor, and community.
It is a very important event for newlywed couples, and also newborns. The celebrations symbolize the beginning of a new chapter of their life. To share the happiness of this occasion, families often gather and exchange gifts.
The food is a very important part of any Indian celebration. Lohri will be more enjoyable with dishes like Makki di Roti (cornmeal-based flatbread) or sarson da Saag (mustard leaf curry). Gajak (sesame seeds sweets), tilladdoo, and other jaggery-based desserts are enjoyed, as well as roasted peanuts, popcorn, and other treats.
